Help
save Guimaras
(by
Agnes Españo-Dimzon).
Oil
tanker M/T Solar 1 hired
by Petron Corporation
to transport bunker
fuel from its refinery
in Limay, Bataan to
Zamboanga sank off the
Iloilo-Guimaras Strait
on August 11, 2006.
The
oil tanker was carrying
2 million liters (528,360
gallons) of bunker fuel
and more than 500,000
liters have already
leaked into the sea.
The Philippine Coast
Guard estimates that
200-300 liters of oil
continue to slip out
of the sunken ship every
hour.
International environmental
watchdog Greenpeace
has declared the accident
an ecological time-bomb
waiting to explode
because oil can smother
mangroves and coral
reefs that sustain important
fish and crustacean
species
